Kanyakumari is a place which every Indian remembers, as it is placed at the southern tip of India and one of the important tourist spots in India.  Nagercoil is the capital town of Kanyakumari District and Asaripallam is about 3 kms from Nagercoil.  Asaripallam is an important place because it is here one of the earliest TB sanatoriums was started.  The TB sanatorium was started in the year 1937 by the then Travancore Cochin Government.  The campus had an area of 100.5 acres which has now become the Kanyakumari Government Medical College, a serene, eco friendly campus with greeneries all around.

Health is Wealth.  To cater to the needs of people in and around Kanyakumari District, the Tamil Nadu Government decided to start a new Medical College at Kanyakumari District.  The Government T.B. Sanatorium campus at Asaripallam, Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District was selected as the site for the proposed Government Medical College.  In G.O. M.S. No.82/H&FW Department dated 11.03.2001 the Government accorded sanction for the establishment of the new Government Medical College at Kanyakumari District during the year 2001-2002 with an annual intake of 100 students in MBBS Course.  The foundation stone also was laid for the same on 12.03.2001 by the then Honourable Minister for Health and Family Welfare.  Accordingly the Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,  New Delhi issued permission to start a Medical College at Asaripallam in Kanyakumari District vide No. U. 12012/101/03-ME (P-II) dated 28.07.2004 and the college is now functioning with effect from 16.08.2014 onwards with an annual intake of 100 students.

As per the Medical Council of India’s revised instruction that Medical College and Hospital should be in the same campus, it was proposed to have 500 bedded hospital worth around Rs.21.73 crores.  The estimates for the new building had been prepared and submitted to Government on 04.06.2002.  As per above G.O. No.219 of Health and Family Welfare permission had been granted for construction of 300 bedded hospital at a cost of Rs.5.00 crores.  The newly constructed 300 bedded hospital was inaugurated by Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 08.12.2004.

Until the permanent buildings were constructed, the college was started in the temporary buildings with all the following departments for the first phace (1st MBBS) Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Community Medicine and for the second phase (2nd MBBS) Department of Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology and Forensic Medicine, Medical Education Department, Lecture Hall, Central Library, Central Animal House, Administrative Block, Hostels for both Men and Women students separately and Mess, Kitchen and dining hall as per the norms prescribed by the Government of India.  The temporary building structure was constructed by modifying and renovating some of the wards already existing in the Government T.B. Hospital at a cost of 1.30 crore.

Further, the Medical Council of India, New Delhi visited this college on 23.04.2005 for renewal of permission for 1st year MBBS., and admission of second batch of MBBS., students for 2005-2006.  Subsequently the permission was granted on 24.06.2005.  Further MCI visits during the following years granted permission for new batches and at present, fifth batch has entered in the year 2008-2009.  To add feather to the cap (Kanyakumari Government Medical College) School of Nursing was started on 3rd February 2004 with an annual in take of 50 students per batch.
